Window tinting is one of the most practical things you can do for your car in India — especially in Haryana, where summer temperatures regularly push car interiors to 70°C+. But tinting laws in India are strict, widely misunderstood, and widely violated — often by the very workshops installing the film.

This guide gives you everything you need to know: the law, the exceptions, the VLT levels and how to ensure you never get a challan for your window tinting.

The Supreme Court Rule — Simplified

In 2012, the Supreme Court of India issued a landmark ruling on window tinting. The rule is straightforward:

⚖️ The Law: Front windshield must allow minimum 70% VLT (Visible Light Transmission). Front side windows (driver and passenger) must also allow minimum 70% VLT. Rear windshield and rear side windows have no minimum VLT requirement under the Supreme Court ruling.

VLT (Visible Light Transmission) is simply the percentage of light that passes through the glass and film combined. A 70% VLT film allows 70% of light through — the film is nearly transparent. A 5% VLT film allows almost no light through — essentially blacked-out glass.

Why Do So Many Cars Have Illegal Tinting?

The problem is two-fold. First, many roadside tinting shops apply dark films to the front windows without informing customers of the legal implications — they prioritize the sale over compliance. Second, police enforcement varies significantly by region and period. Some drivers go years without being stopped. Then a random checkpoint results in a fine and mandatory removal.

The Benefits You Can Still Get — Legally

Here's the good news: even a 70% VLT legal ceramic film on your front windows provides 99% UV blocking and significant heat reduction. You don't need to go dark to protect yourself and your car interior.
